Dave Ruckle explores what happens when familiar materials are pushed into unfamiliar territory. From insulating foam transformed into sculptural landscapes to heavily textured abstract paintings and observations of the natural world, Dave’s work is driven by curiosity, experimentation, and a constant desire to see what happens next.

Dave Ruckle has never been particularly interested in staying inside the lines.
For more than 15 years, he has experimented with materials, techniques, and ideas that often begin somewhere unexpected. Insulating foam sealant became the foundation for landscape dioramas and sculptures. More recently, that same unconventional material has found its way into his paintings, creating dimensional surfaces that transform the way light, shadow, color, and texture interact. For Dave, the process is just as important as the finished piece. He is constantly testing materials, trying new approaches, solving problems, and asking a simple question:
“What happens if I try this?”

The Experiment Is Part of the Art
Sometimes an experiment works exactly as expected. Sometimes it doesn't. Often, the unexpected result is where things get interesting.
This willingness to explore is what connects Dave’s seemingly different bodies of work.
Whether he is building a landscape, developing a textured surface, or trying a new combination of materials, Dave approaches the studio with the curiosity of a tinkerer.
He doesn't just ask what a material is supposed to do. He asks what else it could do.
Somewhere Between the Real and the Imagined
Dave’s work moves between observation and experimentation.
His landscapes are rooted in the natural world, while his abstract work gives him the freedom to explore texture, color, shape, light, and emotion without the constraints of representation.
The two approaches may appear different, but they come from the same place: a desire to explore the world and understand it through making.
For Dave, art is a way of investigating.
Every painting, sculpture, and experiment becomes another opportunity to discover something new.
